(IsraelNN.com) Defense Minister Ehud Barak has agreed to allow 600 armed Palestinian Authority policemen into the northern Shomron city of Jenin - though he knows it does not jibe with the requirements of Israeli security. Explaining his decision this morning, Barak said, "We have overriding responsibility for the security of Israeli citizens, but in order to improve the chances in our talks with the Palestinians, we must try to make things easier for them - even at the price of a calculated risk." (IsraelNN.com) Yekutiel Ben-Yaakov, convicted over a private referendum he conducted, was sentenced on Tuesday to 200 hours of community service, along with a suspended sentence of six months in jail. Ben-Yaakov's parole period is to last for three years. About 50 demonstrators, including some musicians playing protest songs, showed up outside the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where sentencing took place. For more on this story:

A barrage of nine or ten rockets was fired from northern Gaza, according to Sderot Mayor Eli Moyal, who told Voice of Israel government radio that eight of the rockets landed in and around his city. Wednesday, a day of Jonathan Pollard news, began with a blaring headline in Yediot Acharonot, Israel's largest daily, screaming out in the name of defense officials, "The Comptroller Will Sabotage Pollard's Release." The report stated that Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss was "once again causing a storm," and that "security elements" said the country was "insane" for allowing him to investigate the government's mis-handling of the Pollard affair. Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak will discuss the plans with United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Sunday. The US Secretary of State arrived at Ben Gurion International Airport Saturday evening in another attempt to push the pace on talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
